Tucked away at the southern tip of the Peloponnese lies Elafonissos, a tiny island that boasts a beach often mistaken for somewhere in the Caribbean. That beach is Simos — a stretch of coastline so breathtaking that it consistently ranks among the best beaches in Greece. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, fine white-golden sand, and twin bays framed by rolling sand dunes, Simos Beach is not just a destination — it’s an experience.

If you’re dreaming of exotic vibes without leaving Europe, Simos Beach in Elafonissos delivers all the allure of the tropics, minus the long-haul flight. Here’s everything you need to know about this Aegean gem.

Where Is Simos Beach?

Simos Beach is located on Elafonissos Island, just off the southeastern coast of Laconia in the Peloponnese. Despite being a small island — just 19 square kilometers — Elafonissos is home to one of the most spectacular coastal landscapes in Greece.

Simos is actually two beaches in one:

  • Megalos Simos (Big Simos): The larger of the two, known for its expansive sandy bay.

  • Mikros Simos (Small Simos): A more intimate cove just across the dunes.

Separated by a narrow isthmus and surrounded by sand dunes up to 10 meters high, the twin beaches form a rare double crescent that’s as photogenic as it is peaceful.

What Makes Simos Beach So Special?

Water Like the Caribbean

Simos Beach is famed for its shallow, emerald waters, which gradually deepen — making it ideal for both swimmers and casual waders. The clarity is exceptional, with visibility that allows you to spot fish and sea grass even several meters out.

The shades of blue shift throughout the day, from turquoise and aquamarine to deep cobalt, depending on the sun and wind. Combined with powdery sand and dunes, it’s no wonder so many compare it to exotic destinations like the Maldives or Caribbean isles.

Untouched Dunes and Natural Beauty

One of the beach’s standout features is its natural sand dune ecosystem — a rarity in Greece. The area is protected under the Natura 2000 network due to its unique flora, fauna, and geological formations.

In spring and early summer, the dunes are dotted with sea daffodils and wildflowers, adding bursts of green and white to the golden sands. The beach remains largely undeveloped, offering a back-to-nature feel that’s hard to find in more commercial destinations.

A Favorite for Campers

Simos has long been a magnet for free-spirited travelers and campers. While wild camping is now restricted, there is a well-managed organized campsite near the beach offering shade, facilities, and access to a laid-back community vibe.

If you’re not staying overnight, day trips are also easy — but be sure to arrive early in peak season to claim your spot.

Getting to Simos Beach

Reaching Simos Beach is part of the adventure — and entirely worth it.

Step-by-step:

  1. Drive to Pounta (Laconia), near Neapoli in the southeastern Peloponnese.

  2. Take the ferry from Pounta to Elafonissos (10 minutes, departs frequently).

  3. Drive or take a taxi from the port to Simos Beach (about 4 km).

Even in high summer, the logistics are relatively stress-free compared to other island journeys in Greece — another reason Simos remains a hidden gem.

💡 Tip: If you’re not bringing a car, bike and scooter rentals are available on the island.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Simos Beach is June through September, when the sea is warm and the days are long. However, May and early October also offer good weather with fewer crowds.

Because the beach is south-facing and exposed, it can get windy — especially in August. Always check wind forecasts and bring sun protection, as shade is limited.

What to Bring

Simos is partially organized, with some sunbeds, umbrellas, and a beach bar operating during the summer months — but it retains a largely natural atmosphere. You’ll want to bring:

  • Water and snacks (especially if you want to explore both bays)

  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses

  • Snorkeling gear — the waters are ideal for it

  • A good beach towel or mat

  • Cash — some vendors may not accept cards

Final Thoughts: Greece’s Caribbean Secret

Simos Beach in Elafonissos is one of those places you almost want to keep secret — a spot where time slows down, the sea shimmers in impossible shades of blue, and the landscape invites you to relax, explore, and reconnect with nature.

Whether you’re a beach lover, a nature enthusiast, or just someone chasing the feeling of barefoot freedom and sun-drenched serenity, Simos is a destination that will stay with you long after you’ve rinsed the sand from your feet.
