Thinking of visiting Greece in February? You won’t find packed beaches or blazing sun—but you will discover another side of Greece that many travelers miss: quiet archaeological sites, cozy mountain villages, snow-covered peaks, and local life at its most authentic.

But what’s the weather like? Here’s everything you need to know before packing your bags for a February trip to Greece.

The Basics: Winter Weather Across Greece

February is still winter in Greece. Temperatures are at their lowest of the year, especially in the mountains and northern mainland. That said, the southern regions and islands enjoy milder conditions than much of Europe.

Average Temperatures:

  • Athens: 6°C to 14°C (43°F–57°F)

  • Thessaloniki: 3°C to 11°C (37°F–52°F)

  • Crete: 8°C to 16°C (46°F–61°F)

  • Santorini: 10°C to 14°C (50°F–57°F)

  • Zagori/Vikos area: Often below 0°C with snowfall

  • Mountains (like Parnassos or Pelion): Snowy, especially above 1,000m

💡 February is the snowiest month in many inland regions—great for skiing and alpine scenery.

Is It Rainy?

Yes—but not everywhere, and not all the time.

  • Western Greece & Ionian islands tend to be rainier

  • Cyclades & Athens get some rain, but often short bursts

  • Crete sees moderate rainfall, balanced by sunny spells

  • Northern Greece may experience snow and frost

💡 It’s smart to pack a light waterproof jacket and layers you can add or remove depending on the day.

What to Do in Greece in February

You won’t be sunbathing, but you’ll have access to incredible off-season experiences, such as:

1. Winter Sports in the Mountains

  • Arachova & Mount Parnassos – Greece’s top ski resort

  • Metsovo & Northern Epirus – cozy villages and snowy peaks

  • Kalavryta – charming town + ski center near Athens

2. City Sightseeing Without the Crowds

  • Athens’ Acropolis and museums are open—and peaceful

  • Thessaloniki offers Byzantine history + excellent food

  • Museums, cafes, and ruins are far more enjoyable in cool weather

3. Carnival Season Begins

Late February kicks off Apokries, the Greek Carnival season—expect costumes, parades, and traditions, especially in:

  • Patras (Greece’s largest carnival)

  • Rethymno in Crete

  • Xanthi in Northern Greece

Are the Islands Worth Visiting?

While many beach bars and hotels are closed in February, islands like Crete, Rhodes, or Corfu still have life and mild weather. Just don’t expect beach days—this is the time for:

  • Hiking (when trails aren’t muddy)

  • Village culture and local cuisine

  • Photography with soft winter light and no crowds

💡 Avoid very small islands like Anafi or Koufonisia unless you’re seeking isolation—services may be limited.

What to Pack

  • Warm layers (sweaters, thermal shirts)

  • Waterproof jacket

  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots

  • Scarf, hat, gloves (especially in the north/mountains)

  • Umbrella or travel poncho

  • Light sunglasses (you’ll still get sunny days)

Final Thought: Should You Visit Greece in February?

If you’re looking for:

  • Warm beach weather → wait until May or June

  • Cultural exploration without crowds → February is perfect

  • Snowy adventures & cozy tavernas → head north or to the mountains

  • Carnival celebrations → come at the end of the month!

February may not be the Greece of postcards—but it’s real, raw, beautiful, and full of surprises.
