On the eastern coast of Karpathos, where pine forests tumble down dramatic cliffs and the Aegean shifts between emerald and deep blue, you’ll find one of Greece’s most breathtaking coastal escapes: Apella Beach.

Often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Greece, Apella isn’t flashy or overdeveloped. There are no giant resorts or noisy beach clubs here. What you get instead is something far rarer — a stretch of crystal-clear turquoise water, white pebbles, and a landscape so raw and cinematic that it feels almost unreal.

If you’re looking for a beach that blends wild beauty with serenity, Apella delivers.

Where Is Apella Beach?

Apella Beach lies about 18 kilometers north of Pigadia, the capital of Karpathos, along the island’s rugged eastern coastline.

The drive itself is part of the adventure. A winding mountain road cuts through pine-covered slopes, offering sweeping views of the Aegean. The final descent toward the beach reveals a dramatic cove framed by cliffs and forest — a view that alone makes the journey worthwhile.

You can reach Apella by:

  • Car or scooter (parking available above the beach)

  • Boat tour from Pigadia or nearby villages

  • Private boat rental for a quieter arrival

What Makes Apella Beach So Special?

Unbelievably Clear Water

The first thing you’ll notice is the water color. Depending on the sunlight, it shifts from light turquoise to deep sapphire. The clarity is exceptional — you can see the seabed several meters below, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

The beach is a mix of smooth white pebbles and coarse sand, which keeps the water crystal clear even on busy days.

Pine Trees Meeting the Sea

Unlike many Cycladic beaches defined by dry landscapes, Apella is unique because of its lush pine forest backdrop. The scent of pine mixes with sea salt, creating an atmosphere that feels both Mediterranean and almost alpine.

This rare combination of forest and sea gives Apella a sense of depth and coolness, especially in the late afternoon when the sun softens.

A Naturally Protected Cove

The cove offers some protection from winds, although on strong Meltemi days, waves can build. On calmer days, the sea becomes almost lagoon-like — perfect for floating peacefully under the sun.

Facilities & What to Expect

Apella remains relatively unspoiled, but during summer you’ll find:

  • A limited number of sunbeds and umbrellas

  • A traditional taverna nearby serving fresh fish and local dishes

  • Basic parking facilities

There are no large beach bars or loud music — and that’s part of the charm.

💡 Tip: Arrive early in July and August to secure a good spot, especially if you want shade.

When to Visit Apella Beach

The best time to enjoy Apella is:

  • June and September – warm water, fewer crowds

  • July and August – lively but busier

  • May and early October – peaceful, but check weather conditions

Morning visits offer calm waters and fewer people. Late afternoon is magical, when the sun casts golden light across the cliffs and forest.

Things to Do at Apella

While many visitors come simply to relax, there’s more to enjoy:

Snorkeling

The rocky edges of the cove are ideal for spotting small fish and underwater rock formations.

Short Nature Walks

Explore small trails around the beach for panoramic views.

Long Seaside Lunch

The nearby taverna offers classic Greek dishes — grilled fish, dakos, fresh salads, and local wine. A slow lunch here is part of the experience.

Why Apella Feels Different

Karpathos itself is less commercialized than islands like Mykonos or Santorini. Apella reflects this spirit. It feels authentic, peaceful, and slightly adventurous.

It’s the kind of place where:

  • You hear the wind through pine trees.

  • The sea feels clean and powerful.

  • The landscape dominates — not development.

There’s something grounding about Apella. It reminds you why Greek beaches became famous in the first place.

Combine Your Visit

If you’re exploring the eastern side of Karpathos, consider pairing Apella with:

  • Kyra Panagia Beach – another dramatic cove nearby

  • Spoa Village – a charming mountain village

  • Olympos – the iconic traditional village of northern Karpathos

Together, they create a perfect day of sea, culture, and mountain scenery.

Final Thoughts: A Beach Worth the Journey

Apella Beach in Karpathos isn’t just another beautiful coastline. It’s a place where nature takes the lead — where pine forests meet turquoise waters and time seems to slow down.

If you’re searching for a Greek beach that feels both wild and welcoming, Apella should be high on your list. It’s not the easiest to reach — but that’s exactly why it remains unforgettable.
